A large seizure of counterfeit cosmetics and perfumes in Thailand highlights link between counterfeiting and terrorist activity

A three month investigation led to the seizure of 300,000 counterfeit goods at a wholesaler in the Airport market

Background

After three month's investigation we finally found five suppliers of counterfeit product linked to the ‘Nong Kwang' shop in Airport market. There are hundreds of shops in this market selling counterfeit goods such as bags, cosmetics, clothes and watches.

We provided the necessary evidence to the Central Investigation Bureau and the Economic and Technology Crime Suppression Division.

Action

We assisted the Central Investigation Bureau and the Economic and Technology Crime Suppression Division in raids which took place just one day after the goods had been delivered by suppliers. Approximately 20 officers were involved, as well as the Commissioners of both units. Approximately 9,500 copies of several famous brands of cosmetics and perfumes were seized. Further raids were carried out at the premises of the targets in Bangkok and Nonthaburi province. In total, in excess of 300,000 counterfeit goods were seized. As well as counterfeit product, a large stock of guns was found at the target's warehouse premises.

The raids resulted in the arrest of two people for both counterfeiting activity and the unlawful possession of guns.

Comment

This raid has received wide publicity in both local Thai newspapers and on Thai TV Channels 5 and 6. The picture below was taken just after the raid when many guns were found in one of the warehouse premises. This case provides direct evidence of the link between counterfeiting and terrorist activity.
